The awards honor extraordinary contributions to the arts and humanities, and are the highest recognition the U.S. bestows on its artists and scholars. The medal citation reads: “Albert Maysles for rethinking and remaking documentary film in America. One of the pioneers of direct cinema, he has offered authentic depictions of people and communities across the globe for nearly 60 years. By capturing raw emotions and representations, his work reflects the unfiltered truths of our shared humanity.”
In a ceremony at the White House, medals will be presented by President Obama to Albert, along with other legendary artists, renowned scholars, musicians, poets and institutions. The First Lady will also attend.
The Maysles Documentary Center will be live-streaming the ceremony at Maysles Documentary Center (323 Lenox Avenue/Malcolm X Boulevard, between 127th and 128th streets) on Monday afternoon, starting at 2pm and invite you to join us for a viewing party. Refreshments will be served.
