Harlem’s Samuel J. Battle Was first Black NYPD Officer

lt-samuel-battleEast Harlem’s Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia appointing Harlem resident who lived on 138th Street Lt. Samuel J. Battle as member of Parole Commission. Battle was the first black to serve for the NYPD.It’s said that Tourists rode horse-drawn cabs uptown to see the city’s “colored policeman” and gawk at Battle, who was 6-feet-3 and weighed some 280 pounds.
