Michael’s World: 2011 Mustang GT, The Thrill Aint Gone!

January 4, 2011

Being captain of a 2011 Mustang GT, with its 5.0 liter / 412 horsepower V8 engine producing 390 lbs-ft torque that does 0-60 in 4.4 seconds—–is one hell of a thrill ride for a 47-year old brotha!

In Ford’s attention grabbing “Grabber Blue,” Mustang, I dusted every car as soon as the light turned green—with respect to speed limits of course. That’s the kind of power this baby puts out. And even with all that power, the new GT is EPA rated at 17 city / 26 highway. The annual estimate for fuel is $2,145, with regular unleaded selling at $2.86 per gallon and you driving an average of 15,000 miles.

it was also quite fascinating to read the results of Motor Trend Magazine’s challenge between Ford’s 2011 Mustang GT and BMW’s 2011 M3. In it, MT reveals that Mustang’s 5.0—versus M3’s 4.0-liter, 414 hp V8 engine producing 295 lbs-ft torque, “equals or betters the M3 in every performance category we measure.” To that I say to Ford, you’ve come a long way baby!

In absence of a couple of my favorite luxe-life accouterments such as a totally keyless car (entry, push to start, etc.) that operates from a remote in close proximity and rain sensing wipers, I still enjoyed every moment in the GT. What I did appreciate was the subtle reminders of the monochromatic interior design of a Bentley GT Speed. Even with 200 horses less under the hood, Mustang GT has the look and feel–inside and out, of power. And if that power scares your mate, play her, or his favorite song on the booming Shaker 500 audio system and they’ll be fine.

With a base price of $32,845, coupled with the $1,695 Brembo brakes package that includes 19-inch premium painted aluminum rims, and a $385 rear video camera that uses the left corner of the rear view mirror as a monitor, we’re talking less than $36,000.

As for the song, The Thrill is Gone, made famous by the very talented BB King, for whom I have much love, honor and appreciation, I’d have to say those now infamous words, “you lie,” hoping Nancy Pelosi is no where around! ha ha!!!
