Co-authors Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga will celebrate the recent release of their book The Panza Monologues, Second Edition (University of Texas Press, 2014) at La Casa Azul Bookstore in East Harlem on Saturday, September 13, 2-4 pm.
The event will include readings from The Panza Monologues by the authors and special guests Claudia Acosta, Migdalia Cruz and Kai Diata Giovanni as well as a book signing and music by DJ Spiritchild & Alexandro Hernández-Gutiérrez of the band Aparato!
Part “DIY” manual for making theater, part memoir of Tejana lives, part manifesto, The Panza Monologues features the words of Chicanas speaking with humor and candor about their panzas—tú sabes—that roll of belly we all try to hide! With the full performance script and a wealth of materials for producing, teaching, and using the play to build community, The Panza Monologues discusses issues concerning women making independent theater, body image, and Chicana cultural production and its material realities. The play and its many stories boldly place the panza front and center as a symbol that reveals the lurking truths about women’s thoughts, lives, loves, abuses, and lived conditions.
Latina/o Studies scholar Alberto Sandoval-Sanchez said, “This is the most original and historically documented theatre project to date in Latina/o theatre…It is a lesson in making theatre matter, and it spotlights how theatre is informed by lived experiences and historical processes….”
The Panza Monologues NYC Book Release Party is presented as part of Radical Evolution’s Spectrum Series. The Spectrum Series engages artists from a variety of backgrounds, focusing primarily on artists who identify as artists of color, providing them with a platform to introduce their work to an audience. These free events can range from readings to work-in-progress performances to other formats most useful to the artist, and are held at community spaces around the city. The goal of the Spectrum Series is to create an opportunity for artists whose voices are traditionally underrepresented in New York’s artistic landscape to have their work seen and heard in a creative and comfortable setting. Radical Evolution is thrilled to expand the geographic and artistic scope of the Spectrum Series with The Panza Monologues, while still maintaining the core intentions of the series.
