On Sunday November 3, BET premieres Black Girls Rock! 2013. The organization founded by DJ Beverly Bond, provides mentorship for Black girls and pays tribute to Black woman and girls who have a positive impact on the community through an annual awards show.
This year’s show, hosted by Actresses Regina King and Tracee Ellis Ross, will honor the legendary singer Patti Labelle (Living Legend Award), hip-hop pioneer Queen Latifah (Rock Star Award), esteemed writer and producer Mara Brock Akil (Shot Caller Award), tennis icon and entrepreneur Venus Williams (Star Power Award ), community organizer Ameena Matthews (Community Activist Award), ground-breaking ballet dancer Misty Copeland (Young, Gifted & Black Award), and children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman (Social Humanitarian Award).
Some of the presenters and performs are recording artists Marsha Ambrosius, Jennifer Hudson, Sevyn Streeter, Actress Nia Long, Actress Tatyana Ali, TV Personality La Anthony, and broadcast journalist Soledad O’Brien.
Additionally, Black Girls Rock! likes to highlight the next generation of young ladies who are Making A Difference (the MAD Girls). The MAD Girls being recognized this year are Brooklyn Wright who is passionate about litter prevention, Mary Pat Hector the founder of Youth Action USA and Ty-Licia Hooker Founder of Summer Success and Leadership Academy.
