Walter’s World: Weekend Picks- Theatre, Music and Dance

The fall arts season is getting underway. This weekend theater, music, and dance are all in the forefront.

Many of the premiere events are taking place uptown about 110th street.

The highly successful Apollo Music Café returns for a second season at The Apollo Theater on Friday, October 7 and Saturday, October 8. The two nights of soul-stirring, “neo- rock” sounds takes place in the intimate Soundstage, which captures the style and feel of a uptown nightclub. Friday will showcase Sol Ascension, featuring Nigerian songstress Wunmi, the multifaceted Manchildblack and DJ Jihad Muhammad.

Suga Bush led by Taj Mahal’s daughter, Deva Mahal and featuring Danni Gee and Fredericks Brown will appear on Saturday. The Apollo Theater is located at 253 West 125 Street (Between 7th & 8th Avenues). Doors open at 9pm and Showtime begins at 10pm. New Heritage Theatre Group and Take Wing And Soar Productions will present Esther Armah’s SAVIOUR? Billed as “a provocative new drama about white privilege, black women, sex, betrayal, and power, directed by Passion”, SAVIOUR? will have a limited four-week engagement at the Dwyer Cultural Center, 258 St. Nicholas Avenue (123rd Street between St. Nicholas Ave. & Frederick Douglass Blvd.) beginning Friday, October 7 through Sunday, October 30. SAVIOUR? features veteran actors Michael Green and Jimmy Aquino. It tells the story of reverse discrimination . Billy Hall (Aquino) a white high-profile New York activist sues his company when a promised promotion as CEO is given to a black woman. He hires Michael Jamal Williams III (Green), an African-American attorney who sees this case as a career-changer and is willing to win at any cost.

Although the fundraiser for Camille A. Brown and Dancers is on Monday the evening will be a great event for a note worthy cause. The fundraiser will feature a performance by her company and a tribute honoring two outstanding artists, Carmen DeLavallade and Danni Gee. Artistic director and choreographer Camille A. Brown is a 2011 Bessie Award nominee for her solo The Evolution of a Secured Feminine, which was one of the standout works in the 2010 Alvin Ailey American dance Theater season.

Presently the company is preparing for its 2012 Joyce Theater season. The fundraiser will take place on Monday, October 10 from 6pm to 9pm at the Hudson Terrace located at 621 West 46th Street (between 11th Avenue and West Street).
