HW Pick: George Coleman Quartet At Smoke

37th Annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Presented by Shell - Donald Harrison with George Coleman and Eddie Palmieri - May 6, 2006As part of the Smoke in Harlem’s 15th anniversary celebration Saxophonist George Coleman, a musician of rare genius, is making some of the most inspired music of his long career. After arriving here from Memphis by way of Chicago over 50 years ago, Coleman took part in classic recordings by Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Chet Baker. Starting in the 1970s, he focused on his own groups, which often feature the pianist Harold Mabern. Those who know “Big George” never miss a performance and those who don’t should consider a remedy for the situation. His quartet famously opened Smoke 15 years ago this month and he makes a very special return to celebrate the club’s anniversary.

The George Coleman Quartet is George Coleman, tenor saxophone, Harold Mabern piano, John Webber, bass and Joe Farnsworth, on drums.
